–Top judge says judiciary won’t allow embezzlement of taxpayers’ hard-earned money
Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar on Tuesday stressed for across-the-board accountability, saying the judiciary won’t allow corrupt people to get away with taxpayers’ hard-earned money.
Speaking to a private media outlet, the top judge pledged to take measures for the betterment of society and asked the nation to remain “calm” as corruption will be dealt with all fairness.
Also, the top judge hinted at improvements in the National Accountability Ordinance (NAO), saying there was a room for improvement in the NAB laws.
Judiciary and armed forces do not come under the ambit of NAB, a body formed by former president and dictator General Pervez Musharraf in 1999. Political parties have time and again criticised the bureau for meting out discriminatory treatment to politicians on the pretext of accountability.
With regard to Pakistanis having offshore properties, the top judge said, “A team has been formed under the chairmanship of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) governor to bring back looted money to the country.”
“Through the protocol signed with Britain, we have received important information regarding properties owned by Pakistanis.”
“Pakistanis who own properties in Britain were not sharing details. I had selected 15 Pakistanis who own properties in Britain, of which only seven appeared before the court and further investigations in this regard are underway,” he said.
About the much-hyped dam fund, the chief justice said a special bench is being considered to keep a watch on the money.
The chief justice is currently visiting the United Kingdom to raise funds for the construction of Diamer-Bhasha and Mohmand dams.
