An ugly brawl unsettled Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar’s dams fund event hosted in the United Kingdom (UK) by the UK Pakistan Chamber of Commerce & Industry (UKPCCI) where two groups exchanged blows which resulted in a major upset to the noble cause.
According to reports, eminent lawyer and LUMS faculty member Mian Zafar Iqbal Kalanauri was involved in a fight with the event’s organisers who, he claims, threatened and misbehaved with him.
Videos of the brawl show organisers and a group of lawyers causing a rumpus during the event which halted the proceedings. Guards can also be seen trying to control the situation but to no avail. Kalanauri and his associates were later pushed out of the ceremony despite their fierce protest.
Later on, a press release was issued by the UKPCCI which blamed Kalanauri for causing disturbance and stopping the event.
Kalanauri tried to reach the CJP and was stopped by security before he went into a rage and started shouting at everyone, the statement said, adding that he was neither harmed nor attacked by the security team.
In one footage, the chief justice can be seen sitting in the midst of a crowd and complaining about the disruption.
Kalanauri is a senior partner at his law firm Zafar Kalanauri & Associates. He also serves as a member of the Supreme Court’s special committee on structural reforms in legal education formed under Chief Justice Saqib Nisar.
The chief justice is currently visiting the UK to raise funds for the construction of Diamer-Bhasha and Mohmand dams. Around 1.2 million euros were raised by the Pakistani community and families who attended the event and the total could have jumped to 200,000 euros further if it weren’t for the disturbance, the release said.
