KARACHI: The food street at Karachi’s Hassan Square was demolished on Sunday as development authorities carried on an anti-encroachment drive in the city.

On Saturday, the Supreme Court (SC) had directed Karachi Development Authority (KDA) to not stop the drive amid voices of protest from different sectors of civil society. The Acting Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Gulzar Ahmed had issued directives for the city “to be restored to its state 30 years ago” as “no hurdle will be tolerated” in the operation.

KDA officials have reported that the market behind Baitul Mukarram has also been demolished.

They added that the operation will next move on to Safoora Goth, after a crackdown was held on illegal encroachments from Hassan Square to Safari Park.

The KDA State Enforcement Cell has also demolished Junagarh Lawn located near National Stadium. Local shops located at Burns road have also been demolished using heavy machinery.
