QUETTA: At least nine people sustained injuries in an explosion inside a mosque in Balochistan’s Chaman area on Wednesday evening.

The injured, including the mosque imam, were taken to District Headquarters Hospital, Chaman, the medical superintendent said.

All wounded are out of danger and most have sustained burn injuries, the MS added.

According to media reports, the explosion was caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) hidden inside the mosque. The blast was so powerful that it was heard far and wide.

Law enforcement agencies reached the site soon after the blast, while bomb disposal squad inspected the site to collect evidence.

The incident took place when Eid Miladun Nabi was being celebrated across the country amid strict security measures.

The Balochistan chief minister condemned the incident and directed authorities to ensure provision of medical facilities to the injured.

Awami National Party (ANP) chief Asfandyar Wali and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Hamza Shehbaz also condemned the attack.

The video of the incident was also shared on social media.

At least one person died and several sustained injuries in attacks in the city this year.

On August 12, one person was killed and several wounded in a blast on Chaman’s Mall Road, police had said.

In January, back to back bomb explosions in the city injured several, including security officials.
