Key commander of banned outfit AQIS arrested from Karachi

KARACHI: The Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) during a search operation on Tuesday nabbed a suspect of banned outfit Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS).

According to media reports, the CTD carried out an operation and arrested AQIS key commander Umar Jalal Chandio alias Katheio from Gulshan-e-Iqbal on a tip-off.

The suspect hails from Mir Pur Khas and was residing in the neighbourhood of Tahir Minhas alias Saain in Chandio Kotri.

It is vital to mention here that Tahir Minhas is a key suspect in the Safoora bomb attack which was responsible for the deaths of 47 people of the Ismaili community.

Tahir Minhas was arrested by the CTD in 2015 along with other militants.

In the JIT report on the Safora massacre, it was said that Jalal Chandio was made as local Amir of the outfit after the arrest of Amir Abdul Rehman in 2011.

Former CTD chairman Raja Umar Khattab, during a press conference in 2015, said that Jalal was associated with the Arab Network of Al-Qaida while Hajji Sahib (Hypothetical name) was active in terrorist activities in Warrh, an area of Balochistan and Karachi.

The militant group that mostly consists of Baloch youth has been involved in attacks on NATO containers, terrorism and kidnappings for ransom.

Security officials claimed that Jalal’s wife is also an active member of AQIS.
