LAHORE: The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Punjab government to submit a report on its progress in filtering water.
The directives were made as a two-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar heard a case at Supreme Court’s Lahore Registry related to dumping of polluted water in River Ravi.
“Mian Mehmoodur Rasheed Sb who is in power in Punjab?” inquired the CJP as the hearing began.
“The provincial government is that of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) Naya Pakistan,” the Punjab minister for Housing, Urban Development and Public Health Engineering answered.
“We don’t know if Naya Pakistan is to be made or not,” the CJP remarked.
“The whole city’s polluted water is being dumped in River Ravi. Till date, no work regarding water filtration has been done. Who has to do this work?” the top judge inquired.
“All departments keep pointing fingers at each other. Water filtration work needs to be done on an emergency basis,” he further remarked.
“Mian Mehmoodur Rasheed Sb do something. This is an important issue, form a committee and submit a report within one week on the work being done for filtration of water.”
CJP Nisar directed the provincial government to furnish the report within one week.
Hearing of the case was then adjourned.
