Former DIG gunned down in Quetta

QUETTA: A former senior police officer was gunned down in an armed attack in the provincial capital on Saturday.

According to reports, unidentified assailants opened fire on former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Naeem Kakar when he was walking towards his home after offering prayers at a mosque in the Junior Assistant Colony area on Zarghoon Road, injuring him seriously. He was rushed to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) where he succumbed to his bullet wounds.

Kakar had survived a suicide bombing seven years ago in which a police constable was killed while 17 others, including three children, sustained injuries.

In April 2011, a suicide bomber had rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into the residence of DIG Investigation Wazir Khan Nasir located in the Police Lines.

Kakar, who was then serving as DIG Crime Branch, was injured as his house was also destroyed in the explosion.

A large number of police and security personnel have been martyred in Balochistan this year.

At least 29 people, including six policemen, were martyred in a suicide bombing outside a polling station near the Eastern Bypass in Quetta on July 25.
