RAWALPINDI: At least five civilians were injured when Indian border forces opened unprovoked fire across the Line of Control (LoC) on Saturday.

According to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the incident took place in Leepa sector of the LoC in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).

Heavy weaponry was used by the Indian forces, evoking a befitting response from the Pakistani security forces, the statement further said.

The injured civilians have been identified as Zaheer, Nasir, Shaukat and Muneer. All four belong to Bijlidar and Batiala villages.

In an update on the cross-border firing, the ISPR said a fifth civilian, 20-year-old Tania Bibi of Gujrakh village, was injured in Bagsar sector near AJK’s Bhimber district.

The incident took place two days after a Pakistan Army soldier was martyred in unprovoked firing by the Indian troops on the LoC. Sepoy Zaheer Ahmed was martyred in the Thub sector of the LoC. He belonged to village Sultan Pur in Bhimber district and is survived by a widow.

Ceasefire violations are a frequent feature along the LoC and Working Boundary despite the leadership of Pakistan Rangers and India’s Border Security Forces agreeing in November 2017 that the “spirit” of the 2003 Ceasefire Agreement must be revived to protect innocent lives.
