Adviser to Sindh Chief Minister on Information Murtaza Wahab on Friday settled the dust of uncertainty as he said that the intrusion of law enforcement agencies (LEAs) in plainclothes into Karachi Press Club (KPC) on Thursday night was based on a “misunderstanding”, a private media outlet reported.
He further said that an initial inquiry into the incident suggests that the law enforcers went there due to “some problem in their GSM locator”.
According to the media reports, Karachi Additional IG Dr Amir Ahmed Shaikh said that an inquiry into the incident has already been ordered, directing South SSP Pir Muhammed Shah to this effect. The South SSP visited the KPC and met with its office-bearers.
It was further said that the office bearers of KPC were “satisfied” after the version about the “actual situation” was given to them by the police.
Earlier in the same day, Senate Chairman Mohammad Sadiq Sanjrani had directed the Sindh government to present a report on an intrusion into the Karachi Press Club (KPC) the other day by gunmen in plainclothes, who purportedly also harassed journalists.
National Party President and Senator Mir Hasil Khan Bizenjo raised the issue in the Upper House who requested Sanjrani to seek a report from the interior ministry on the matter.
“Yesterday, armed men entered the Karachi Press Club and searched it too,” Bizenjo said. “They also misbehaved with journalists,” he added.
At Bizenjo’s request, the Senate chairman asked the Sindh government to furnish its report, adding that the interior minister’s response on the intrusion will also be sought later.
The incident took place when a number of armed gunmen in plainclothes had entered the KPC on Thursday night and harassed journalists, according to a statement released by KPC, a local media outlet reported.
“Dozens of gunmen in plainclothes entered the KPC at 10:30 pm, harassed journalists, examined different rooms, kitchen, the upper floor of the building and sports hall. They forcibly made videos and took pictures with mobile cameras,” the statement said.
Additional IG Karachi Dr Amir Ahmed Shaikh was immediately informed of the incident who promised investigation over the matter.
