SHC summons secretary, others over petition seeking stern punishment on rape crime

KARACHI: Sindh High Court (SHC) on Wednesday summoned provincial home secretary, secretary law, and prosecutor general and directed them to appear before the court with preparation and submit clarification on a petition seeking strict punishment and legislation for the accused involved in sexual harassment of women.

The SHC, while hearing a petition filed by a citizen, Kainat Soomro, asked the officials to tell the court, to what extent implementation is being carried out on the orders of Supreme Court of Pakistan pertaining to rape cases.

It summoned the top officials and ordered them to give an explanation on November 15.

During the hearing, the petitioner stated that the SC had issued orders for the formation of a modern mechanism for the effective investigation to resolve rape cases.

Soomro said that apex court had also ordered for amending the laws pertaining to the trial of accused. She further stated accused in many rape cases were being acquitted due to lack of effective legislation.

She also appealed to the court that the Sindh Government should be advised for bringing reforms in DNA test law and others laws.

The court, later, adjourned the hearing till the November 15.
