The Punjab government aspires to hold local body elections at the grassroots levels on a non-party basis, a private media outlet reported on Wednesday.

According to reports, the government is likely to submit a plea in the Lahore High Court (LHC) seeking review of the court’s verdict of holding local body polls on party basis.

It merits a mention here that court had ordered Punjab government to hold local body elections on a political party basis while declaring Section 18 of the Act “void and ultra vires to the constitution”.

Section 18 reads: “…election of members of all local governments shall be held on non-party basis, through secret ballot on the basis of adult franchise in such manner as may be prescribed.”
