Human Rights Minister of Pakistan Shireen Mazari has revealed that Prime Minister Imran Khan has been advised to sign the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance (ICPPED), an international human rights instrument by the United Nations (UN).

At a meeting of the Senate Functional Committee on Human Rights, she said: “Country-wide legislation takes a lot of time as bills get stuck in different ministries. So for quick redress, we should sign the convention with reservations over three clauses which do not suit Pakistan.”

The human rights minister added that the convention could be ratified later on, however, it was important to sign it and send a message to the international community that Pakistan felt seriously on the issue.

“We will continue working on a domestic bill and will pass it in order to criminalise enforced disappearances in due time,” she stressed.
