Family protests death of youth in police custody

The police are investigating into the death of a youth, who according to the family, was tortured to death by the Raja Jang police in custody on Monday.

The family of the deceased Jahangir said the youth had no crime history, while the police claim he was a suspected robber.

District Police Officer (DPO) Shahzad Asif suspended the police officials from service and ordered the Superintendent of Police (SP) Syed Ghazanfar Ali to probe into the case, reported local media.

The police also registered a first information report (FIR) on the complaint of the deceased’s father Muhammad Noor, of Haveli Mahtab Singh, that his sons Jahangir and Farooq had a row with some villagers over an issue on Saturday.

Later, Assistant Sub-Inspector Muhammad Abbas and constables Muhammad Asif and Muhammad Anwar picked his sons and detained him at the police station.

According to the police, who also informed the family on Monday, that Jahangir had died due to a heart attack at the Kasur District Headquarters Hospital. Later, the family of the deceased protested at the hospital.

The medical examination will reveal the reason behind the death.
