ISLAMABAD: Newly appointed Islamabad Inspector General of Police (IGP) Muhammad Amir Zulfiqar met the Minister of State for Interior Shehryar Afridi on Monday and assured that under his leadership, the capital police force will face reformation and regularization, becoming an ideal one.
The interior minister called upon the IGP and shared his vision for the future of Islamabad police, directing the police chief to pay heed to citizen’s complaints.
He added that there was a need to curb corruption within the police forces, and to launch a campaign condemning the use of narcotics in educational institutions.
Responding to the interior minister’s concerns, IGP Zulfiqar assured him that he will work to reform the capital police upon an exemplary model, setting a precedent for other provinces.
On Friday, the Establishment Division had issued a notification posting Zulfiqar, a BPS-21 officer of Police Services of Pakistan (PSP) as Islamabad IGP, thus effectively replacing Jan Muhammad who had relinquished his charge over a controversy surrounding his transfer allegedly over a disagreement with Federal Minister Azam Swati.
Previously, Zulfiqar was working as an officer on special duty (OSD) in the Establishment Division, having served as Motorway Police IG along with Punjab IG operations, DIG operations, DIG CTD, Multan RPO, Multan CPO, Lahore Special Branch SSP, Lahore SSP operations among other postings.
Earlier in October, the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar had taken suo motu notice of transfer of the Islamabad IGP and suspended the notification of the transfer, observing that the police chief was transferred on the verbal orders of Prime Minister Imran Khan.
