ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) under the dynamic leadership of NAB Chairman Justice Javed Iqbal has been rejuvenated and become a vibrant and reputable organisation as a result of its proactive anti-corruption strategy by adopting the ‘accountability for all’ policy.
Reports and surveys of various reputable national and international organisations like Pakistan Institute of Legislative Development and Transparency (PILDAT), Mishal Pakistan, Transparency International and World Economic Forum (WEF) have appreciated NAB’s recent performance.
By opening its door to the public, NAB has received 44315 complaints. These complaints were thoroughly scrutinised by committees. Out of these, 1713 complaints were converted into complaint verifications on the basis of prima facie evidence and scrutinised for a second time taking the views of both sides. The process went on with 877 complaints turned into inquiries and subsequently, 227 investigations were opened.
On the basis of across the board accountability, NAB has not only arrested 503 accused persons during one year but also recovered Rs 2580 million from corrupt elements.
The recovery made by NAB was then returned to hundreds of affectees and a few government departments. Not a single rupee of this money was paid to any NAB employee as NAB officers as they were told that this is their duty.
The bureau also filed 440 corruption references in various accountability courts during the last one year.
Today, more than 1210 corruption references are under trial in various accountability courts and the bureau has filed also requests for early hearings. Besides being apex anti-corruption organisation, NAB is role model institution among South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries. It is the only organisation in Pakistan which has a 77 per cent conviction ratio.
All this is a result of the proactive anti-corruption strategy chalked out by the NAB chairman.
The accountability watchdog is also the only organisation in Pakistan that has established more than 50 thousand character building societies in order to educate the youth about the ill effects of corruption. Due to across the bureau’s board actions, the eradication of corruption is the whole nation’s motto today.
Under the dynamic leadership of Justice Javed Iqbal, NAB has perfected its procedures to come up to the expectations of the nation for a corruption-free Pakistan. The NAB chairman believes that the bureau is not for victimisation against anyone. It has no affiliation with any party as its officers are the state servants. Their first and last affiliation is with state of Pakistan.
