Petition filed in LHC for damages caused to public property by TLP protests

LAHORE: A petition seeking damages for the destruction of public property caused by Tehreek-e-Labaik Pakistan (TLP)-led protestors was filed in Lahore High Court (LHC) on Saturday.

The protests had broken out across the country after Supreme Court acquitted Aasiya Bibi, a Christian woman previously on death penalty under blasphemy charges.

The petition filed by a citizen named Abdullah Malik stated that the protests by TLP have caused considerable damage to public and government property.

The protection of the lives and wealth of the citizen was the first responsibility of the government, the petition read, adding that no doing so has violated the basic human rights of the citizens.

The petitioners asked the LHC to order Punjab government to compensate for all the damages caused to citizens.

Furthermore, a first information report  (FIR) was registered at an Islamabad police station against mob violence at Taramari Chowk in the capital city.
