Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Co-chairman and former president Asif Ali Zardari on Thursday said that it is yet to be proved that he had deposited money in the fictitious accounts opened in the name of various people.

Speaking to a local news outlet, he said that every other day, a milkman or a meat seller is found with a huge sum in their account but unless the authorities prove that he got those accounts opened, a case cannot be lodged against him.

“I have an understanding of the law. First, they have to prove that I went and got those accounts opened,” he added.

He also said, “Even if I submitted money in fictitious accounts, I can still defend myself by saying that it is my choice.”

Zardari said that bank officials are at fault in this case because if the account holders had no knowledge of accounts being operated in their name then those officials must be held accountable.
