KARACHI: An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Thursday said that the accused who robbed Amal Umer’s family and fled from the scene on the day she was shot dead will be indicted on November 3.
According to a police report, “Khalid was robbing people along with his accomplice in Karachi’s Defence on August 13 when a policeman fired at him”.
“However, one of the stray bullets hit Amal, who was travelling along with her parents, and she died moments later,” the report stated.
It was reported that Khalid was arrested on September 25 and Karachi Police chief Dr Amir Ahmed Sheikh had said that the accused was arrested during an encounter carried out by personnel of Artillery Maidan Police Station.
“Weapons, mobile phones and a rickshaw were seized from his possession,” the police chief had added. The Karachi police chief had further said that Khalid, a resident of Hijrat Colony and a rickshaw driver, admitted to involvement in seven theft incidents.
Earlier, in September, CJP Mian Saqib Nisar had taken suo motu notice of the matter days after Amal’s mother Beenish Umer’s account of the incident appeared in media. The suo motu notice concerns the “irresponsible firing” by the police as well as the “failure of [a] well-known medical hospital to provide emergency medical aid as required by the law”.
