ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday rejected an apology submitted by Dr Aamir Liaquat Hussain’s lawyer in an ongoing contempt case and further ordered Dr Aamir to appear before the bench in person.

While hearing the case Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar lashed out against the TV anchor saying “anyone can speak against the judiciary and insult it”.

The CJP asked if the additional attorney general was present in court as he had to frame the charge sheet against Dr Aamir.

The MNA’s lawyer urged the court to accept the apology as the “door to forgiveness never closes”.

Following that, the hearing was adjourned for a recess.

Earlier, in August, the SC had registered a contempt of court charge against Hussain while taking up petitions filed by anchorperson Shahzeb Khanzada, Independent Media Corporation (Pvt) Ltd, Mir Ibrahim-ur-Rehman and Najam Sethi accusing Hussain of flouting the March 28, 2017 restraining order in which he was cautioned to desist from defamatory campaigns and unethical manner of conducting television shows.

In May, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) banned the PTI leader for 30 days for making hate speeches on TV. He was banned from making any television appearances during Ramzan.

According to reports, the television host was guilty of using Ramzan transmissions as an excuse for making sensational and controversial statements to invite drama.
