Halloween is right around the corner and scary movies are on everyone’s radar. Although scary movies, in general, can be very polarizing; some people live for the jump scares, the suspense, haunting and of course the nightmares, a great horror flick brings with it.

To live the Halloween spirit, it is the time of the year to keep the fears aside and enjoy a scary movie as many of us may not go Trick-or-Treating, we can definitely party with a bunch of friends at home and binge watch some of the scariest movies of all time; because it is Halloween after all.

To make it a little easy for all of you, we have listed down the top five movies that you should definitely watch this Halloween; fair warning, you’ll probably lose sleep over these.

1 – The Shining

The 1980s classic directed by Stanley Kubrick was a haunted-house masterpiece adaptation of Stephen King’s novel.

A man (played by Jack Nicholson) accepts a job as the winter caretaker of a massive hotel in Colorado and moves his family (played by Shelley Duvall and Danny Lloyd) there just as the cold sets in among the mountains. But the hotel is the source of great evil.

2 – The Exorcist

The Exorcist was released in 1973 and was a game changer for the way horror films were done and revolutionised the way these movies blended legitimate scares will stomach-churning special effects.

The movie directed by William Friedkin tells the story of Father Damien Karras’ (played by Jason Miller) who attempts to drive a demonic spirit out of the body of a young girl named Regan MacNeil (played by Linda Blair).

3 – The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 

The 1974 American horror film directed by Tobe Hooper is a standard Halloween movies that you cannot miss.

4 – The Blair Witch Project

Released in 1999, the film wanted you to see it as non-fiction, the actual record of three students pursuing a local legend in Maryland. Directed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez, this film is pioneer to when footage became the technique in horror movies. Grab your popcorns and get ready for another adventure.

5 – Insidious

In recent years, Hollywood has not come up with a genuinely scary movie. The only one that stood out was the first movie of the Insidious series, directed by James Wan. Insidious is one of the few movies that maintain its scariness upon repeated viewings. From the well-timed jump scares to the creepily iconic imagery; the frights come often and hit hard while watching Insidious and it has been far too long that we have said that about a horror flick.

Casper – The Friendly Ghost
