ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) on Friday ordered prisoner Qamar Abbas Gondal to present relevant original papers in the court regarding his transfer as he was brought to Pakistan from abroad on fake documents.
Hearing a case regarding an overseas prisoner’s phony transfer into the country, Justice Asif Saeed Khosa stated that such phony acts have destroyed the country’s reputation in the world. “Now no one is willing to sign extradition agreements of prisoners with us,” he said.
“Thousands of captives from our country are rotting out in the foreign countries’ lockups only due to such acts and we ask why the world is not ready to trust us,” he said.
He said the court wants to conclude this case because it is necessary for the country’s image abroad.
The additional attorney general (AAG) apprised the judge that Qamar Abbas Gondal was sentenced for 11 years in Britain. After a brief period, he was sent to Pakistan to complete his sentence. However, he got premature freedom after a few days of arrival when section officer Ali Muhammad Malik prepared a fake circular letter for his release. So, the accused was released in 2011 instead of 2019.
The counsel told the judge that the fake documents were tailored when section officer Ali Muhammad Malik was in the Ministry of Interior.
Justice Asif Saeed responded by saying that he was bound to provide evidences about the section officer’s character and asked whether the letter sent to the British government was present on the record.
To this the counsel replied in negative stating that he was only has the photocopies in possession. The judge rejected the photo scan and order to present original papers while adjourning the hearing for 15 days.
The federal government had appealed against Qamar Abbas Gondal and section officer Ali Muhammad Malik in the SC.
