Committee to discuss new media regulatory body

ISLAMABAD: A committee formed to discuss the formation of newly-proposed Pakistan Media Regulatory Authority (PMRA) will meet under Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry on Friday.

According to a notification released by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Thursday, the meeting will be held in on Friday afternoon in Islamabad while all major stakeholders have been invited.

Principal information officer, Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) Chairman Muhammad Saleem, PTA chairman, among others have been requested to attend the meeting.

Earlier in August, the info minister had announced that the Press Council of Pakistan (PCP) and PEMRA will be replaced by a new and unified regulatory authority which will have purview over electronic media, social media and print media.

The information minister said, “[The PTI government] has decided [to do away] with PEMRA and PCP and to form a single, unified authority to oversee print as well as electronic and cyber media.”

The new authority will be called PMRA.
