ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will stay neutral in the row between the United States and Russia amid threats of a new arms race between the two powers, officials said.

Senior officials at the foreign ministry informed local media that both Washington and Moscow were important for Islamabad so Pakistan will not support any side in the latest confrontation.

One official said: “We are hopeful they (the US and Russia) will find a way out of this. Even if they don’t (find a solution), we have to do concentrate on how we can maintain ties with both. We want good ties with Russia and the US. This is our aim.”

Another official said the US-Russia tension was nothing new. “For decades, they have been confronting. We are already in crises and cannot afford to stand with one of them,” he added.
