LAHORE: All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) Overseas President Afzaal Siddiqui on Wednesday revealed that former president General (r) Pervez Musharraf is suffering from a rare disease amyloidosis.
Earlier in September, former APML chairperson Dr Muhammad Amjad while refusing to disclose details of the former president’s illness had announced that he was “growing weaker rapidly” due to an unidentified illness which is why he cannot return to Pakistan to face the treason case against him.
He had, however, assured that the party would submit medical documents to Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Saqib Nisar.
Now, Siddiqui while disclosed details of Musharraf’s illness has informed that the former general’s condition has “weakened his nervous system”, and that he is currently being treated in London.
“Due to amyloidosis, broken protein starts getting deposited in various organs,” he explained. “[As a result] Pervez Musharraf has difficulty in standing and walking.”
The APML also informed that amyloidosis can lead to “the arteries of the heart and brain to choke up, which could prove to be life-threatening”.
Siddiqui further said that doctors have “managed to stop the production of broken protein” in Musharraf’s system and “are now trying to cleanse his body”.
He said that the former president’s treatment could take anywhere from five to six months, adding that he has “appealed to the nation to pray for him” as he intends to return to his hme country as soon as he recovers.
On March 31, 2014, Musharraf was indicted for suspending the constitution on November 3, 2007. In March 2016, he left the country for Dubai to “seek medical treatment” and hasn’t returned since.
