KARACHI: Sindh High Court (SHC) on Monday took notice of non-payment to due to sugarcane growers and summoned Agriculture secretary next week.
SHC judge Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar while hearing the application of sugarcane growers against non-payment of their dues by sugar mill owners expressed annoyance at the Cane commissioner and summoned the agriculture secretary on next hearing.
Sugarcane growers told the court that they are being looted and exploited by the millers. They said their crop was bought at a low price but still then they are not paid their dues. They also said that their dues are not cleared for about one year.
However, Justice Mazhar remarked that we know about all this and we are also doing what could be done for growers. He said we want an investigation committee to be formed to probe into the matter.
Petitioners’ counsel said that despite the court orders, sugar mills are not paying due of the sugarcane growers.
The court remarked that every time the cane commissioner brings the same reports, and his performance is not good. It said that due to the poor performance of the cane commissioner, the court is summoning the secretary agriculture.
The court, later, adjourned the hearing till 30th October.
