Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif Sunday held a meeting with his legal team at Jati Umra residence in Lahore to discuss the corruption references against him and his family and the release of his younger brother and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif.

The meeting was also attended by Khawaja Haris, Azam Nazeer, and Naseer Bhutta.

The Supreme Court (SC) last week asked the accountability court to complete trial against Nawaz in the Al-Azizia and Flagship corruption cases within five more weeks. A bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar granted the sixth and last extension in trial period of Nawaz Sharif.

Sharif’s lawyer Khawaja Haris informed that statement of the accused under Section 342 CrPC is yet to be recorded in one of the two pending references. Moreover, deposition of star prosecution witness Wajid Zia has yet not been recorded in the other case.

Zia’s statement usually takes two weeks to complete, he added, and pleaded the top court to extend the deadline for disposal of the NAB cases against his client until November 30.

On the other hand, Shehbaz is in the custody of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on 14-day physical remand. An accountability court judge on October 16 extended Sharif’s remand on the request of the NAB.
