THARPARKAR: Two more children died of malnutrition in Tharparkar, Sindh within the previous 24 hours as death toll continues to climb.
The two children died at Civil Hospital, Mithhi, according to the Sindh Health Department.
More than 500 children have died in the region this year while 32 died this month alone.
Poor medical facilities, malnutrition and infections cause deaths of 1,500 children each year, according to the health department.
A UNICEF report released this year listed Pakistan among countries with the highest rates of infant mortality.
“Pakistan is the riskiest place to be born as measured by its newborn mortality rate,” the report stated. “A baby born in Pakistan is almost 50 times more likely to die during his or her first month than a baby born in Japan, Iceland and Singapore.”
