DIAMER: 22 suspects currently in police custody were responsible for attacks on schools in Diamer, Diamer Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) Roy Ajmal announced on Friday.
More than a dozen schools were burned down in Diamer, Gilgit Baltistan in August this year.
A Joint Investigation Team (JIT) formed to investigate the attacks and conduct an operation against the miscreants found that the attacks were conducted in an organised manner – vandalising property and then burning.
Furthermore, foreigners were suspected of working with local facilitators to carry out the attacks.
Ajmal informed a meeting chaired by Inspector General (IG) of Police Gilgit Baltistan Sanaullah Abbasi that 25 cases were registered in Chilas, Darel and Tangir.
He further explained that 65 of the 87 suspects arrested during the investigations were released while 22 were found to be responsible for the attacks.
“This way, all cases have been traced,” he said.
SSP Ajmal also demanded police to be provided with security equipment, elaborating that the investigations run slow because of such deficiencies.
IG Abbasi expressed his thanks to the army and law enforcement agencies for assistance.
