ISLAMABAD: The federal and provincial governments were directed by the Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday to submit the details of the funds they reserved for the disabled people in their budgets of the last five years.
These directives were issued by a three-judge bench headed by Justice Azmat Saeed while hearing a petition filed by the disabled people who want a uniform policy to be formulated regarding their appointment in government jobs. The bench also ordered the governments to submit affidavits stating that they had been following laws regarding the employment of disabled people. The federal and provincial governments were also asked whether they felt there was a need for further legislation for the well-being of the disabled people.
During the hearing, Justice Azmat Saeed also said, “We should be informed about the government’s plans and if the government does not intend to do anything then it should tell that to the disabled people.”
Following this, a petitioner requested the court that directives be issued to the federal and provincial governments regarding the formulation of a uniform policy for disabled people in this regard. Responding to his request, Justice Azmat Saeed said that the resources available would be considered before the formulation of such a policy, adding that the provinces should compete with each other in serving the public and especially the disabled people.
