Federal govt removes heads of state-owned banks

ISLAMABAD: The Federal government on Monday announced to remove the heads of National Bank of Pakistan (NBP), Zarai Taraqiati Bank and First Women Bank, according to a notification.

The notification, released by the finance division, said, “In pursuance of federal cabinet’s decision taken in its meeting held on October 4, 2018, the reappointment of President/CEO First Women Bank Tahira Raza is hereby terminated with immediate effect.”

“Executive Vice President (of the First Women Bank) Naushaba Shahzad will be the acting president and CEO,” it added.

Two deputy governors of the State Bank of Pakistan, Shamsul Hassan and Jameel Ahmed, were also terminated from the positions.

Moreover, SME Bank President Ahsanul Haq has been removed from his position while Dilshad Ali Ahmed will now replace him as the acting president. Sheikh Imamullah will serve as the vice president of the Zarai Taraqiati Bank.

On October 4, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry had announced that the government would remove the officials “illegally appointed” by former finance minister Ishaq Dar from service.

According to the announcement, the officials dismissed from their posts include Saeed Ahmed, the president of National Bank of Pakistan; Tahira Raza, the president of First Women Bank; Syed Talat Mehmood, the president of Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited; and Ehsanul Haq Khan, the president of SME Bank. In addition, four regulators appointed during the previous government’s tenure have also been removed including: Jameel Ahmed, the deputy governor of State Bank; Shamsul Hassan, the deputy governor of State Bank; M.S Vadiya Khalil, the chairperson of the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP); Dr Mohammad Saleem of CCP; and Shahzad Ansar of CCP, the minister said.
