Sherry accuses government of inefficient foreign policy

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party’s (PPP) Vice President and Senator Sherry Rehman on Thursday said that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government’s foreign policy has utterly failed, putting Pakistan to an absolute isolation in the international community.

She termed Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s visit to Newyork as unsuccessful.  The government failure in combating important issues has adversely affected Pakistan in the international arena.

She said that Pakistan has been put at risk in Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and expressed her fear that China may also not support whereas the Indian Foreign Policy is much effective and successful.

She said that instead of strengthening relations the government has lost its friend also. She was annoyed over the way China’s foreign minister was given the reception.

She said that in terms of the bilateral relationship of two countries, there is much difference between China and other countries.

She said that China is not happy over the reception of its foreign minister and adverse impacts are seen following the government’s casual deportment in its dealing with hard time friend.

She said that China is the hope for Pakistan in FATF but it is backing out owing to the discourteous behaviour of the government.

She said that gravity of the situation can be understood from the fact that despite earnest requests from the government of Pakistan Saudi government is not ready to lend oil.

She stated that Shah Mahmood Qureshi did not even mention about the blocked coalition support fund during his meeting with his American counterpart Mike Pompeo during his visit to Pakistan and during a meeting in Newyork.

She said the asking for the coalition funds is not shameful as we had already spent a lot and said that such a foreign policy is absolutely unsuccessful.

The government should keep discussing with US government on different issues, and pressing for a single item may result in the refusal, she added.

She said that talking to American is different which the incumbent government has no capacity to understand.

She warned that China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is also at risk as the government contention to review the past agreements has annoyed the stakeholders.

She further said that taking a loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is no wrong as the world resolve economic issues through the loans.

She also criticized that behaviour of the ministers of the incumbent government and said that their behaviour is non-political thus intolerable.

She said that if Imran Khan wants to run government unhindered then he must behave with the political entity in the parliament.

She said that It seems that once again the journalists will have to come out on the roads and protect against the government to protect freedom of the press.

On the occasion, PAFUJ President Rana Muhammad Azeem, APNEC Chairman Ikram Bukhari, PFUJ M Secretary General Jamal, Punjab Union of Journalists President Naeem Mustafa, Karachi Union of Journalists President Hassan Abbas, Rawalpindi and Islamabad Union of Journalist President Shakeel Ahmed, General Secretary Siddique Aznar, Kaleem Shamim, Raja Javed, Asif Parvez Butt, Muhammad Asif Butt and other journalist asked questions from her and she answered in detail.
