KARACHI: Long-time journalist, writer and scholar Shaikh Aziz passed away at the age of 79 on Sunday.
Travelling on the Super Highway near Nooriabad in the day, he suffered a heart attack. He was transported to Hyderabad and later shifted to Aga Khan University Hospital due to a lack of facilities.
He underwent a successful angioplasty and was able to converse with his family members afterwards. However, later during the day, his heart stopped beating and he passed away.
Born on December 9, 1938, Shaikh Aziz went to Britain on a fellowship of the Thomson College of Journalism and graduated in 1968.
During his career, he worked with different newspapers such as Dawn, Daily Hurriyat, Jang, Daily Sindh News, Weekly Sindh Observer, the Daily Ibrat, and the Daily Karwan.
He received the Taraqi Pasand Literary Award in 2001 and the Diplace Excellence Award of Journalism in 2000.
He also served as president of the Hyderabad Press Club in 1963 and 1966, the president of the Hyderabad Union of Journalists in 1974 and a judge at the All Pakistan Newspaper Society from 1998-2004.
His publications include The History of Sindhi Literature, Bhutto ─ Memoirs and Remembrances, Mahlati Dastanain and Amali Sahafat.
Aziz’s funeral prayers will be held at KDA Overseas Bungalows Block 17 Gulistan-i-Jauhar at 1 pm on Monday, Oct 8.

In a condolence message to his son Tariq Aziz Shaikh, the PPP chairman said that late Shaikh Aziz was a professional and outstanding personality whose dedicated services in the fields of journalism, literature and history will remain an asset for the future generations.
Bilawal Bhutto Zardari prayed to Almighty Allah to rest the departed soul in eternal peace and grant courage and fortitude to the members of bereaved family to bear this irreparable loss with equanimity.
