GB police blocks 141 social media accounts for spreading hatred

ISLAMABAD: At least 141 social media accounts have been suspended and legal action taken against five people by the Gilgit-Baltistan police for posting anti-state content and spreading religious discord.

Special Branch Additional Inspector General (AIG) Hanifullah informed Inspector General of Police Sanaullah Abbasi on Thursday that the content posted on social media was being monitored by the police.

Hanifullah explained that 104 accounts were blocked over anti-state content and 37 were suspended for religious hatred.

He elaborated that five people arrested were booked under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, 2016.

In response, IGP Abbasi said that the police force’s social media monitoring cell will be upgraded with modern facilities and allotted a larger staff.
