Al-Azizia Steel Mills reference adjourned till Monday

ISLAMABAD: The Accountability Court (AC) of Islamabad Friday adjourned the hearing of the Al-Azizia Steel Mills case against former prime minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif till Monday.

AC Judge Arshad Malik resumed hearing of the corruption reference against the former prime minister filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB). Nawaz Sharif appeared before the court.

During the cross-examination by defence counsel Khawaja Haris, NAB investigation officer (IO) Mehboob Alam deposed that when he started investigation into the matter, he had the relevant record collected by the joint investigation team (JIT). He also aware about the agreements of Gulf Steel Mills, he added.

He stated that Tariq Shafi was neither involved into investigation nor was presented as a witness before the trial court and he had already recorded his statement before the JIT. He knew Abdullah Ahli as another party in the Gulf Steel Mills agreement, he added.

Khawaja Haris stated that the IO provided answers to the questions on the basis of hearsay. “Was the IO present on the occasion when the JIT recorded the statement of Shafi?” he asked.

Later, the court adjourned the reference when Khawaja Haris will continue cross-examination of Mehboob Alam.
