Students announce sit-in against fee hike, FIRs

PESHAWAR: Students from the University of Peshawar (UoP) have announced to hold a sit-in today (Thursday) against the surge in fees, corruption and FIRs against the students and warned to start ‘Jail Bharo Tehreek’ (offer arrest) if the violation was made by the university administration.

Speaking at a press conference here at the Peshawar Press Club on Wednesday, Muttahida Students Mahaz (MSM) Chairman Bilal Khan said that the sit-in would be held inside the university. He said that fake first information reports (FIRs) had been registered against the students just to conceal corruption of the administration, which he said, was being made at a large scale and due to which the university was facing a deficit.

Criticising the university administration, he said that owing to handsome packages to the persons associated with the administration, politics and corruption, the university was brought on the brink of destruction while its students were feeling their future dark.

Accompanied by Abdul-Qayyum Shinwari, Sohail Mahmood and other students, he said that the BS-20 provost seat had been lying vacant for two and half years while deputy provost was handed over the responsibility of the post on ad-hoc basis, who he accused of implicating the students in the fake cases instead of resolving ordeals of the students.

Similarly, Bilal Khan said that another vacant post of the assistant provost had been filled with an assist warden of the hostel illegally, adding that on a responsible post, ad-hoc appointments were made. He maintained that embezzlements and irregularities of millions of rupees had been made in Bara Gali campus and hostels and as per the students, both the hostels and the campus lying under the supervision of the provost and his assistant.

The student leader demanded a removal of the provost and his assistant from their jobs and an inquiry committee be formed to probe into the matter. He said that there were hundreds of issues being faced by the students as Rs669 millions were being spent on the university schools every year while canteens within the university were given to some professors on contract on fewer amounts, who he said had given to other contractors on high rates.

Responding to a query, he said that they had already met the provincial governor and apprised him with the issues of the students and irregularities of the administration but he (governor) was yet to call a meeting in this regard. Therefore, he demanded to introduce point system in the university like other universities. He said that transports of the university be used for the students instead of other purposes.
