LAHORE: Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday passed orders for a strict implementation of the smoking ban at workplaces and educational institutions.
Hearing a petition regarding the smoking ban, Justice Ali Akbar Qureshi stressed that smoking was strictly prohibited at public offices and academic institutions.
Punjab Chief Secretary Akbar Hussain Durrani made a recommendation that the court should write to all public departments and issue notices directing strict implementation of the law.
The court also summoned the Director General (DG) Social Welfare Sajid Zafar Dall on October 2.
The petitioner had said that smoking in public places has a bad influence on children and was transitioning into drug addiction at educational institutions.
During the course of hearing, counsel for the petitioner, Ashar Siddique, said laws barring smoking in public offices and educational institutions were not being implemented.
He raised the issue of second-hand smoke consumed by innocent bystanders and added that smoking in workplaces leads health issues. He also prayed the court to ensure implementation of the ban.
