ISLAMABAD: Arshad Daad has been chosen as the secretary general of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
He was selected for the post after the disqualification of PTI leader Jahangir Tareen Khan.
Arshad Daad previously served as the additional secretary general of the party.
“Arshad Daad, additional secretary general of the party has been appointed as secretary general with immediate effect,” read a notification issued by PTI on Monday.
The post of the secretary general was vacated by Jahangir Tareen in December last year and has been vacant since then. Tareen’s legal efforts to review his disqualification judgement failed after the Supreme Court upheld the judgement last week.
Tareen, who was disqualified in December 2017 under Article 62(1)(f) of the Constitution by the Supreme Court, remains ineligible to contest the elections due to the misdeclaration of assets. The disqualification was made on the same provision under which former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was held ineligible to hold public office for life in the Panama Papers case.
In a landmark judgement announce in April this year, the apex court had ruled that a disqualification handed down under Article 62(1)(f) of the Constitution is for life.
However, Tareen had argued at the time that the SC’s ruling on lifetime disqualification was “not applicable” in his case.
“I always believed 62(1)(f) to be for life, but [it is] not applicable in my case,” Tareen had said following the April verdict.
