JAMMU: A soldier of India’s Border Security Force (BSF) committed suicide by shooting himself from his service rifle inside a camp in Rajouri district of the Indian-held Kashmir (IHK), the Press Trust of India news agency quoted officials as saying.

Head constable Ram Charan, posted with the 126th battalion, was on duty when he fatally shot himself in the neck at Sunderbani BSF headquarters, the officials said. On hearing the gunshot, his colleagues rushed him to a local hospital where he was declared brought dead, they said.

The officials said the motive behind his taking such an extreme step was not known immediately. Police have registered a case in this connection and handed over the body of the deceased to his unit after legal and medical formalities in Sunday morning.

NEW ARMY CAMP IN KULGAM: The Kashmir Media Service reported that several people were critically injured when the Indian troops used brute force on protesters in Redwani area of Kulgam district. The troops fired bullets, pellets and teargas shells on the people who were protesting against the opening of a new army camp in Redwani.

On the other hand, a policeman was killed in an attack on a police station in Shopian. The attackers decamped with service rifle of the slain policeman. Addressing a party meeting in Srinagar, Islamic Political Party Chairman Mohammad Yousuf Naqash asked India to reciprocate to Pakistan’s offer for talks and take steps for Kashmiri resolution.
