SIUT refutes reports declaring Dr Adib Rizvi’s death

KARACHI: Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) on Saturday rejected reports that the centre’s founder and philanthropist Dr Adib Rizvi had passed away.

The urology and transplantation centre issued an official announcement that said: “This is to inform that a totally false and fabricated news is being circulated on social media and text messages about the demise of Professor Adib Rizvi.”

“SIUT denies this baseless news,” the announcement read.

“There is no iota of truth in the messages that are being circulated,” it added.

Further, the notice said that the institution is “contemplating legal action under the Electronic Crimes Act, 2016, Section 18 for spreading false news regarding a person”.

The notification also stated that SIUT has made an appeal to the chief justice of Pakistan to take suo moto action of the “heinous cyber defamation” and “punish the perpetrators”.

President of the Transplant Society of Pakistan, Dr Rizvi is one of the pioneers of transplant surgery in Pakistan.

SIUT began as a eight-bed ward in Burns Unit of Civil Hospital Karachi. In 1991 it was granted the status of an Institute by an Act of the Sindh Assembly.

In 2005 SIUT Trust was created as a charitable trust for the benefit of the public aiming to provide medical facilities and financial assistance to those who are at the end stage of renal ailments.
