ISLAMABAD: Senate Standing Committee on Interior Friday directed NADRA and Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) officials to present the name of the senior official, who had ordered to shut down the RTS on the election day, within 3 days.

The committee, while rejecting the recommendation for suspension of NADRA chairman and two other officers owing to the failure of RTS, remarked that no officer should be removed from office unless the probe into the matter was completed.

The committee also recommended punishing under the Election Act, the presiding officers who failed to comply with the orders of the ECP.

Briefing the meeting, Senator Rehman Malik said that the committee had completed about 80 per cent probe into the irregularities committed during the July 25 polls.

“Committee on election rigging has filed 3 reports in the Senate so far and is satisfied that a parliamentary committee has been constituted to probe the matter,” he said.

Committee chairman inquired from ECP officials if the results were coming through RTS and the orders were issued to shut the system down at 11:45 pm all of a sudden.  He also directed that the name of the officer who issued orders to shut down the RTS be presented before the committee.

ECP officials said the forensic inquiry in respect of audio tapes would be conducted and a report will be submitted to the committee.
