MINNEAPOLIS: A Pakistani student is among students attending the Nobel Peace Prize Forum at Agusburg College in Minneapolis.
The 20-year-old student, named Anila Bao part of a cohort of 22 students at the event.
Nobel Peace Prize Forum’s theme this year is “The Paradox of Peace” which deals with striving for peace in conflict areas in order to avoid future conflicts.
Nobel Peace Prize winner Columbian President Juan Manuel Santos and The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) winner Beatrice Fihn led a session at the forum.
“[Fihn] was the highlight of the conference [for me],” said Bano who asked Finh about the future of nuclear weapons in Pakistan.
“I liked that she focused on a humanistic approach, while taking into consideration the environmental aspects of nuclear weapons. [Fihn] thinks Pakistan’s case is complicated; she cannot say [Pakistan] should give up [nuclear weapons] because of security reasons with the conflict between Pakistan and India,” added Bano.
Fihn has been striving to formulate an agreement between all countries to sign and ratify a treaty to eliminate nuclear weapons. 60 countries have signed the treaty while another 14 have ratified it as well.
