KP govt says only parliament can decide on citizenship for Afghan refugees

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government Spokesman Shaukat Yousafzai has said that no decision has been taken so far regarding giving nationality to Afghan refugees and the parliament is the sole authority to decide the fate of refugees living in the country.

Briefing media persons regarding cabinet meeting on Thursday, Shaukat said that as per the charter of human rights, whenever a person is born, he has to be given the nationality of that country where his birth takes place. However, this stance of the government was not supported by different circles and the final decision will be made in the parliament, he added

Yousafzai said that a 19 kanal and 14 marla land of forest department has been given for establishing cantonment in Swat and soon work would be started to build the cantonment in the district.

He further added that after the abolishment of KP Ehtisab Commission, all the pending cases would be handed over to NAB and anti-corruption department for investigation.

The spokesman said that Rs2 billion taken for billion tree tsunami programme from the hydel development funds have been returned to the department while arrears of 117 ongoing schemes would be transferred to respective departments.

He informed that the cabinet meeting has also decided to give the power of the appellate court to an additional judicial secretary instead of the home secretary. Moreover, another directorate for pharmacy and drug control was also approved which would be responsible to maintain the quality of drugs during preparation and provision of services to hospitals.

He went on to say that the directorate of pharmacy would ease the work of director general of health, who supervises various programmes like TB control, malaria, hepatitis, aids control and immunisation programmes, besides procurement of medical equipment.

The government has also decided to appoint district and session judges as ATC judges and repatriation of their services to Peshawar High Court.

Yousafzai said that the provincial cabinet has also decided to register two publishers and printer companies of Holy Quran for a five-year term. They include Tehseenul Quan Trust Abbottabad of Mohammad Iqbal and Hashmat Ali publication in Qissa Khwani Peshawar.

The cabinet also decided to regularise the services of employees of the transport department and took the decision to transfer land of forest department to Pakistan Army for the establishment of a cantonment in Swat.

The cabinet also gave the approval to appoint three members for search and nomination committee, three teaching hospitals and reorganisation of the member of the board of governors.

The three new members of the committee would include Mohammad Rafiq of Tibb, Asia Khan from civil society and Mohammad Ishfaq.
