LONDON: British Home Secretary Sajid Javid has expressed his government’s desire to work closely with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) under Prime Minister Imran Khan in order to curb corruption and money laundering concerns on the condition that there is “evidence” of corruption, and the party is not capitalizing on empty political rhetoric.

Earlier on September 16, Foreign Minister (FM)Shah Mahmood Qureshi had received British Home Secretary Sajid Javid at the Foreign Office.

Speaking in Islamabad, Javid had said the partnership will strive for “justice and accountability” and the PTI government remarked that it will help eradicate money-laundering.

However, speaking in London, the home secretary warded off any unrealistic expectations associated with the partnership and added that progress against alleged money-launderers or corrupt elements will be strictly upon merit and dependent on the availability of conclusive evidence.

The two sides had discussed various areas of regional and bilateral cooperation, in particular, regional security, counter-terrorism, organized crime, migration, human trafficking, money laundering, and asset recovery.

The foreign minister had stressed the need to expand Pakistan-UK cooperation and translate the existing ties into a tangible and multi-faceted strategic partnership. He appreciated DFID’s contribution towards the development of socio-economic sectors in Pakistan.

The British home secretary had conveyed his government’s desire to support and work closely with the new government in all areas of mutual interest.

The two countries closely cooperate under the institutional framework of the Enhanced Strategic Dialogue.
