An inquiry committee has been formed by the Punjab government to probe the incident of ‘attempted rape’ of a lady doctor at the Rahim Yar Khan’s Shaikh Zayed Medical College and Hospital (SZMC&H).
On Wednesday, a sweeper allegedly tried to rape a woman medical officer in the emergency ward of the hospital.
A notification issued by the government said the three-member committee will conduct “detailed probe into the incident of alleged harassment of lady doctor”.
Doctors said their colleague was alone in a room when the suspect tried to overpower her. She cried to alert the security guards around and succeeded to save herself. Guards held the suspect and handed him over to the police, according to media reports.
Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar had also taken notice of the matter, directing an inquiry into the matter.
The Young Doctors’ Association (YDA) had protested against the incident. YDA President Dr Amjad and Dr Shabbir Warraich led their colleagues and gathered outside the principal office. They chanted slogans against the hospital administration for their failure to provide safety to doctors.
They demanding punishment for the culprits and security legislation to avoid such incidents.
Earlier, the SZMC&H administration had suspended director emergency department and deputy medical superintend (night shift).
A first information report was registered against the accused who is a sweeper of a private sanitation company, police said.
