LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC), while remarking that protecting the rights of minorities is a responsibility of the government, summoned the chief of Evacuee Trust Property Board on a plea seeking allocation of land for funeral rites of Hindus.
The high took up the case for hearing on Wednesday.
During the course of the hearing, petitioner Ishtiaq Chaudhry took the plea that there is no proper space for offering funeral rites of Hindus adding due to lack of Shamshan Ghatt. “Hindus are facing difficulties in performing their funeral rituals,” he said.
The court observed that protection of the minority’s rights is a responsibility of the state.
The petitioner prayed court that land should be provided for the construction of Shamshan Ghatt by Hindus so that they could perform their funeral rites.
The court while adjourning the hearing of the case till September 26 summoned evacuee trust chief on the next hearing.
