Balochistan Chief Minister Jam Kamal on Tuesday said that reservations persist on Prime Minister Imran Khan’s statement about granting citizenship to the Afghan refugees.

He said that the nation should be taken into confidence before taking such decisions. He urged the prime minister to take decisions on the refugees’ issue under light of the current constitutional policies.

Prime Minister Khan said that Pakistan was working with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for voluntary repatriation of the Afghan refugees to their homeland. On Akhtar Mengal’s points regarding the status of the Afghan refugees and Bengalis, he said that his party had signed an agreement with BNP-Mengal for the return of these refugees.

He said that under the international convention, the refugees cannot be forced to go back to their homeland. He said that 1951 Act also stipulates that the children born in the country were citizens of Pakistan.
