SHC gives four weeks to KE for reply on over billing


KARACHI: Sindh High Court (SHC) on Friday gave four week time to K-Electric (KE) for submitting its reply on an allegation of consumers who are getting excessive bills from them through digital smart meters.

SHC was hearing a plea filed by a citizen, Aziz Shahid, against KE for getting extra bills through digital smart metres. The SHC gave four weeks to KE for submitting its answer.

However, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) submitted its comments.  NEPRA said that it had received a citizen’s application against the charging of extra units of electricity in the bill. NEPRA said that it had already sought an explanation from KE and it had told that the problem has been resolved.

The counsel of applicant told the court that NEPRA’s answer is misleading because electricity meters are still being controlled by KE’s head office. He said that units are increased through mobile phones and remote control devices.

Applicants said that metres which were imported from a Chinese firm are being controlled through some software. KE had extorted billions of rupees from consumers through this method, the applicant said, and requested that investigation of this mega-corruption be handed over to National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

The applicant also appealed the honourable court to give orders for removing digital metres from the megacity.
