ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Environment Protection Agency (EPA) Director General Farzana Altaf Shah and Human Rights Cell Director General Khalid Teepu Rana were directed by the Supreme Court on Friday to submit a report on industrial units in the federal capital within five days.
A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar was hearing a case regarding environmental pollution in Islamabad.
The CJP inquired if authorties had taken any steps to control industrial pollution.
EPA DG Farzana Altaf Shah responded that no such steps have been taken.
“We are not even allowed to conduct an inspection,” she said.
“Mill owners don’t know about the power of SC,” remarked the CJP in response, adding that pollution from factories and mills was impacting health of local citizens.
“We will take Rs5 million from them as security,” he remarked further.
“Mill owners have made us from watchdogs to just dogs,” said the EPA DG.
“Those who have not submitted the security deposit, will have to pay 8 per cent markup on security, which will be put into the dam fund,” the CJP responded.
CJP Nisar then directed relevant authorities to inspect and present a detailed report on environmental pollution in Islamabad within five days.
The case has been adjourned till September 24.
