LAHORE: The opposition in the Punjab Assembly on Wednesday paid tribute to Kulsoom Nawaz’s struggle for democracy and expressed sorrow over her demise.

Kulsoom passed away at a hospital in Britain’s capital on September 11 after a protracted battle with cancer. Her funeral will be held on Friday.

A resolution pertaining to Kulsoom’s role in politics was submitted by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) lawmaker Hina Pervez Butt, who sought renaming departments in Islamia College, FC college and Punjab University after the departed.

“Pakistan has been deprived of a great pro-democratic woman. Begum Kulsoom led PML-N during her husband’s exile. She continued efforts for democracy despite being under house arrest,” read the resolution.

Hina said, “Kulsoom could not visit the constituency due to health issues yet won the by-polls.”

“This shows the love showered upon her and the respect she held,” she added.

She also reflected on the Sharif family’s decision to leave Kulsoom in London during her cancer treatment and travel to Pakistan and lashed out at political opponents who according to her had used Kulsoom’s health while she was alive for political point-scoring.
