New Christian divorce bill to be brought in NA: HR minister

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Human Rights Dr Shireen Mazari on Wednesday said that the ministry had drawn up a new Christian divorce bill for the National Assembly while continuing to take pragmatic measures to ensure the better status of minorities without any prejudice.

Talking to a representative delegation of Christian and Hindu communities in a meeting to discuss the laws and rules to protect the rights of minorities, she said the constitution of Pakistan granted human rights protection and Ministry of Human Rights ensured its implementation.

She further said that all the minorities in the country had religious freedom and complete security adding that they were enjoying complete freedom as equal citizens of the beloved nation.

“Concrete steps have been taken through a comprehensive strategy to ensure the protection of rights of minorities,” she said, adding that improvement in minorities’ socio-economic status was one of the governments’ top priorities.

Federal Secretary Rabiya Javeri Agha and other officials of the Human Rights Ministry also attended the meeting in which matters related to the rights of minorities including the laws and rules for their protection also came under discussion. The delegation was also told about the implementations of laws, policy and measures.

Members of the delegation also put forward suggestions in this regard and appreciated the endeavours of government, especially the Ministry of Human Rights, for the protection and promotion of rights of minorities.
